Work in short strokes from the outside of a mat inwards rather than trying to pull the comb straight through. Hold the coat at the base with your other hand so the pull is taken by your fingers and not the skin.

A mat that is tight against the skin is a job for clippers, not a comb. If the coat has pelted, speak to a groomer or your veterinarian rather than working at it.
