Puppies tip bowls, stand in them and drink less than they should. The bowl you pick either fixes that or fights you daily. Weight, height and spill design matter more than looks.

Types to Choose From

Anti-spill bowls

Water fountains

Around $27. Moving water encourages drinking, which matters for puppies who are not taking in enough, and for cats sharing the house.

Large dispensers

Elevated bowls

Around $21. Raising the bowl reduces neck strain for taller breeds and slows a fast drinker slightly.

Slow feeder bowls

Hygiene

Wash daily. A film on the inside of a water bowl is bacteria, and stainless steel or ceramic is far easier to keep clean than plastic, which scratches and holds it. Two bowls in rotation means one is always dry.
