Why Toy Choice Matters More Than People Think

A dog that is bored finds its own entertainment, and it is rarely the outcome you wanted. The right toy is not about keeping a dog busy for ten minutes. It is about giving the dog something to work at, which tires a dog far faster than a walk of the same length.

Types of Dog Toy to Choose From

Puzzle feeders

A bowl with obstacles, or a toy that releases food as it moves. These turn a meal that took ninety seconds into one that takes fifteen minutes. Ours run from about $30. Best for fast eaters and for dogs left alone during the day.

Snuffle mats

Fabric with folds that hide kibble, so the dog uses its nose to find it. Scent work is genuinely tiring, and a snuffle mat is the easiest way to give a dog some at home. Around $22.

Treat dispensers

Rolled, rocked or chewed to release food. Around $30 and a good first puzzle for a dog that has not used one before.

Fetch toys

Frisbees and throw toys for dogs that would rather run. Rubber holds up better than plastic against repeated retrieving.

Matching the Toy to the Dog

Start easier than you think you need to. A puzzle a dog cannot solve gets abandoned, and once abandoned it is difficult to reintroduce. Once your dog empties one in under a minute, move up a level. Supervise any new toy the first few times to check how your dog goes at it, particularly a determined chewer.
