Why an Indoor Potty Helps

An indoor potty gives a puppy a clear, consistent place to go before it is vaccinated and allowed outside. It also covers apartments, night times, wet weather and older dogs who cannot wait. The point is not to avoid outdoor training, it is to stop the puppy choosing its own spot in the meantime.

Types to Choose From

Artificial grass pads

Our indoor grass pad at around $33 and the washable trainer mat at around $22. Grass texture transfers well to real lawn later, which is the main argument for them.

Artificial turf trays

Around $68 for a larger turf setup, better for a litter or a bigger dog.

Absorbent pee pads

Around $36. Simplest option, and the one to use while a puppy is still working out the idea at all.

Making It Work

Put it in one place and leave it there. Moving a potty resets the training. Take the puppy to it after every sleep, every meal and every play session, which in the first weeks means roughly every 45 minutes. Clean it with an enzyme cleaner rather than anything ammonia based, because ammonia smells like urine to a dog and invites a repeat.
