Choosing the right lead

Standard leads are the sensible default for everyday walking. A 120cm lead gives most dogs enough freedom without letting them wander into the road. Look for a padded handle if you walk a strong dog, because it is the difference between a pleasant walk and sore hands.

Retractable leads suit open spaces and confident recall. They are not ideal for busy footpaths or reactive dogs, where a fixed length gives you far more control.

Double leads and couplers let you walk two dogs on one handle. A 360-degree swivel ring is the feature that matters here, because without one you will spend the walk untangling.

Slip and training leads are useful for short, supervised training sessions and for handling unfamiliar dogs. They are not for unattended use.

What breeders should look for

If you are raising a litter, you need something different from a pet owner. Lightweight puppy leads matter because a heavy clip on a small neck teaches a puppy to fight the lead rather than follow it. Soft webbing and a small trigger clip make the first few sessions calmer, and a set of leads in different colours makes it far easier to keep track of individual puppies during handling and photos.

For puppies going to new homes, a matching lead and collar is a small addition to a puppy pack that new owners remember.

Sizing and materials

Nylon webbing is hard-wearing, washable and the most practical choice for most dogs. Rope leads have more give, which takes the shock out of a sudden pull. Leather softens with use and lasts for years if you look after it.

Match the width to the dog, not the breed name. A lightly built greyhound and a stocky staffy of the same weight need different things. As a rule of thumb, 1cm webbing for dogs under 10kg, 2cm for 10 to 25kg, and 2.5cm or wider above that.
