Once a litter is up on its feet, the whole job changes. Pups that were sleeping and feeding suddenly want to chew, explore, chase and test every boundary you set, and the gear you reach for shifts from whelping supplies to the everyday kit of a growing dog.

What you reach for changes with it. Bowls and water fountains that survive being stood in. Puzzle feeders and toys for a brain that has just switched on. Harnesses, travel restraints, grooming basics, toothbrushes. And indoor toilet options, because a pup part way through its vaccinations still has weeks to wait before the front gate opens.

Feeding, Chewing and Keeping Busy

Pups that bolt their food do better from a puzzle feeder or slow bowl, which stretches a meal out and gives a busy brain something to solve. Fresh water should always be available, and a spill resistant water bowl or fountain saves a lot of mopping in the pen. Rotate enrichment toys rather than leaving everything out at once, and size chew toys to the pup so nothing can be swallowed whole. Any toy that starts to break apart goes in the bin.

Handling, Grooming and Travel

Early handling is what makes an easy adult dog. Teach pups to accept their feet, ears and mouth being touched now, and start a toothbrush routine while it still feels like a game. A harness is generally kinder than a collar for a pup learning to walk, and it should sit clear of the armpits with room for two fingers under every strap. For car trips, a properly fitted seat belt restraint keeps a wriggling pup safe and the driver focused.
