Kitten Packs

A kitten pack is what a breeder sends home with a kitten so the first fortnight is not a series of nine o'clock trips to the shops. It is also the moment a new owner decides whether you are a serious breeder or someone who sold them a cat, so it is worth getting right.

What is in the packs

The male and female kitten packs at around $60 each are put together for exactly this, covering the basics a new home needs on day one rather than a random assortment. Buying the pack is cheaper than assembling the same items individually, and it saves the breeder a job at the busiest possible time.

Building your own

If you would rather assemble it, the parts are all here. A collar with a bell and an AirTag holder at around $42 covers identification for a kitten who will eventually go outside, and a bell genuinely does reduce what they catch. Twelve-piece coloured collars at around $23 are for the litter rather than the new owner, letting you tell identical kittens apart from the first day and keep weight records that mean something.

Toys matter more than people expect. A clockwork or interactive mouse from around $23 gives a kitten something to chase that is not your ankles, and a kitten that learns to hunt a toy is far less likely to treat hands as prey. A donut bed from around $46 gives them somewhere of their own in a house that is entirely unfamiliar.

Worming is the one nobody should skip. Cat allwormer from around $32 covers kittens from half a kilo, and the schedule is tighter in the early weeks than most new owners realise. Send the record home with the kitten so the next dose is not missed in the move.

What makes a pack worth having

Include the things a new owner cannot easily guess at: what the kitten has been eating, when it was last wormed, what litter it is used to, and the vet's details. A pack of good gear with no paperwork is worth less than a modest pack with a proper record.
