Give most dogs a pool of cool water on a hot afternoon and you will not see them again for an hour. A dog pool is one of the cheapest ways to take the edge off a summer day, and it beats chasing them round the yard with a hose.

Choosing a Size and Style

Pick a pool your dog can stand in with the water coming up around their chest or lower. They should be able to turn easily and climb out without scrambling. Inflatable pools are softer and lighter, though a claw catches them more easily, so keep them clear of gravel and sharp edges. Using It Safely

Supervise every session. Not all dogs swim well, and confidence in a paddling pool is not the same as confidence in a dam or the surf. Start shallow, let your dog step in on their own terms and never lift a nervous dog in. Empty the pool between sessions rather than letting water sit and warm up, and rinse your dog off after a long soak. Watch for signs of overheating even in the water, and keep shade nearby.

Care and Storage

Let the pool dry fully before folding it away, or you will find mildew next summer, and store it out of direct sun. On the hottest days, pair pool time with a cooling mat in the shade, keep chilled water in reach from your bowls and feeders setup, and float a dog toy to tempt a hesitant swimmer.
