The tapered guide slides under the mat and cuts it apart from below, which is far kinder than pulling. Useful on long-coated dogs and cats, and on any pup whose coat has just changed and started matting behind the ears and under the legs.

The cutting edge is sharp. Work away from the skin, hold the base of the mat so you are not pulling on the coat, and keep it out of reach when not in use.
