A belly band is a wrap that goes around a male dog's middle, covering the penis, with an absorbent pad inside. It catches marking and light incontinence. It is not a nappy and does nothing for solids. If you have a female dog, or you need coverage for both, look at our Dog Nappy collection instead.
The most common reason. An entire male in a house with other dogs, or one visiting somewhere unfamiliar, will mark. A band interrupts the habit as well as catching the result, because a dog that marks and immediately feels damp tends to do it less.
Age related incontinence is gradual and a band is usually the first thing that helps. Worth a vet check first, since sudden incontinence in an older dog can mean something treatable.
A band keeps a dressing clean and stops a dog reaching a wound as easily.
A puppy going to a new house, or any dog staying somewhere unfamiliar, will often mark for the first few days and then stop.
Measure around the middle just in front of the back legs, with the tape snug but not tight. Every brand sizes differently and weight ranges on packaging are a guide at best.
Ours are washable, from around $21 to $39. Buy three at minimum so there is always one clean, one in the wash and one on the dog.
High absorbency bands suit overnight and older dogs. Standard bands are enough for daytime marking.
Snug enough that it does not rotate, loose enough that you can slide two fingers underneath. A band that slips will leak, and one that is too tight will chafe. Change it as soon as it is wet, because leaving a damp band on causes skin irritation quickly, and that is the main thing that goes wrong with them.
Members keep bands on hand for stud dogs visiting for a mating, where marking in an unfamiliar house is close to guaranteed.
