A single litter can chew through hundreds of disposable pads before the pups go home. Washable pads change that arithmetic. You buy once, launder often, and the cost per use keeps falling for as long as the pad survives your washing machine.
Reusable pads are also calmer underfoot. The fabric top gives pups something to grip as they start walking, and a quilted pad stays put instead of shifting and bunching the way a thin plastic backed sheet does.
Work on at least three per space you cover: one down, one drying and one in the wash. That rotation is what makes washables workable, because a single pad puts you back on paper the first time the machine is running. Buy them large enough to reach up the sides of the box, and check the backing is properly waterproof rather than only water resistant.
Scrape solids off first, since dirty pads wash badly and a rinsed pad comes out far cleaner. Give heavily soiled pads a cold rinse before the main cycle, because hot water sets stains and odours. Wash warm with ordinary detergent, skip the fabric softener as it coats the fibres and kills absorbency, and avoid bleach unless the label allows it. Line drying is kinder to a waterproof backing than a hot dryer. If pads smell even when clean, a hot wash with a cup of white vinegar in the rinse usually resets them.
Washables are not the tool for whelping day itself. Birth fluids and meconium are worth binning, so keep disposable pads for the delivery and bring the washables in once the box settles. Many breeders run both over a heated whelping mat, and send new owners home with a couple of training pads that already smell of the litter. The full range sits in our puppy pads collection.
