They change the handling of your bike noticeably, so take a short, quiet ride before committing to a longer one. Towed trailers are the better answer for medium and larger dogs, or for anything heavier than your bike frame is happy carrying. Check the stated weight capacity and the internal dimensions rather than guessing, because your dog needs room to sit up and turn around.

Safety on the Road

Look for an internal tether clip so your dog cannot leap out, a mesh cover for insects and debris, and reflectors or a flag for visibility. Brakes on a trailer are a real advantage on hills. Strap everything down before you set off and give the hitch a firm tug. Stick to paths and quiet streets while you both learn, and remember that a covered trailer heats up quickly, so ride early or late in summer.

Getting Your Dog Used to It
