Why People Search for Dog Crocs

What most people are describing when they search that phrase is a lightweight moulded clog with ventilation holes and a heel strap, sized for a dog's paw. That is what RPBA dog clogs are, and they are the summer option: easy to rinse, quick to dry, and light enough that most dogs accept them faster than a closed boot.

What Dog Clogs Are Actually For

Hot pavement is the main one. Australian asphalt in February can reach temperatures that will blister a paw pad in under a minute, and the usual test still applies: if you cannot hold the back of your hand on the ground for seven seconds, it is too hot for your dog. Clogs also help on hot sand, on gravel, and around anyone with a paw that is healing.

Choosing Between the Styles

Clogs and sandals

Open, vented and light. Best for warm weather and short walks. Our non-slip sandals start around $20 and the beach sandals sit just above that.

Waterproof silicone boots

The most weather-proof option and the cheapest at around $13 for a set. They pull on over the paw and seal against wet grass and mud. Less breathable, so not for a long summer walk.

Rain boots and soft waterproof shoes

Leather rain boots at around $44 and soft waterproof shoes at around $62 are the closed options. These suit winter, bush walking and anything with a sharp surface.

Anti-slip socks

Not footwear for outside. Cotton anti-skid socks at around $29 are for indoors, on floorboards and tiles, and they are the usual answer for an older dog losing grip or a dog recovering from surgery.

Getting the Size Right

Measure rather than guess. Stand your dog on a sheet of paper with weight on the paw, mark either side of the widest point, and measure between the marks. Add a few millimetres. A paw spreads under load, so a shoe fitted to a lifted paw will be too tight the moment your dog stands on it. Front paws are usually wider than back paws, which is why some sets come in two sizes.

Getting a Dog to Accept Them

Almost every dog walks strangely the first time, lifting the legs high like a show pony. That passes. Put them on indoors for a few minutes with something to do, take them off before your dog gets frustrated, and build up. Going straight from first fitting to a full walk is how you end up with a dog that will not let you near its feet.

Finishing Touches

Shoe charms, from around $22, are the same idea as the ones people wear on their own clogs. Small, cheap, and the reason a lot of these end up as gifts.
