Stainless steel is the workhorse. It does not hold odours, it will not crack and it goes through the dishwasher without fuss. Food grade silicone and plastic are light and good for travel, but they scratch, and scratches trap bacteria. If a plastic bowl has gone rough inside, retire it.

Shape, Depth and Eating Speed

Match the depth to the muzzle. Deep, narrow bowls suit long noses, while flatter, wider bowls are kinder to flat faced breeds and to puppies just learning to eat solids.
