What Intensive Care Means for a Newborn

A newborn puppy cannot regulate its own temperature for the first two weeks. A chilled puppy stops digesting, stops feeding and fades. Most of what looks like intensive care is really three things done well: keeping it warm, keeping it fed and keeping the records that tell you which one is failing.

Warmth

Heat pads and lamps are in our puppy heating pad and dog infrared lamp collections. This is the single most important element and the one most often got wrong.

The Temperature Rule

Never feed a cold puppy. A puppy under about 34 degrees cannot digest, and formula sitting undigested in the stomach will kill it faster than the missed feed would. Warm slowly over an hour, then feed. Fast rewarming causes its own problems.

Knowing When to Call the Vet

Constant crying, cold to touch, no weight gain in 24 hours, or a puppy separating itself from the pile. Fading puppy syndrome moves in hours, and home care past that point costs time you do not have.
