The first milk a bitch produces is not ordinary milk. Colostrum is thick, antibody rich and available for only a short window after whelping, and it gives newborn pups the passive immunity they cannot yet make for themselves.

When a pup misses out, whether through a caesarean, a bitch with no milk, or an orphaned litter, you are left needing a substitute in a hurry. This collection covers colostrum style supplements and milk replacers suitable for newborn pups.

Why Timing Matters So Much

A newborn's gut can absorb these large antibody molecules for a very limited period after birth, and that ability falls away quickly over the first day or so. That is why getting every pup onto the teat early is one of the highest value things you do on whelping night. If a pup cannot nurse in those first hours, a supplement is the next best option, but discuss the situation with your vet, as pups that miss colostrum entirely may need closer monitoring and a different vaccination plan later on.

Choosing and Using a Supplement

Choose a product formulated for puppies or a suitable milk replacer rather than anything intended for people, and avoid cow's milk, which is poorly matched to a pup's needs and often causes scouring. Mix fresh for each feed, follow the dilution on the packet exactly, and warm to body temperature rather than hot. Deliver it with a nursing bottle if the pup can suck, or through tube feeding under veterinary guidance if it cannot. Keep milk replacer on hand for the days that follow and weigh daily on puppy scales to confirm the pup is gaining.
