Why Daily Weighing Matters

Weight is the earliest signal you get. A newborn puppy that is not gaining is in trouble twelve to twenty four hours before it looks unwell, and by the time it looks unwell you have lost most of your options. A set of scales and a notebook is the cheapest insurance in whelping.

Choosing the Right Scale

Newborn scales

Digital puppy scales reading 1g to 10kg at around $59. The 1g resolution is the point: a 300g puppy losing 8g overnight matters, and a kitchen scale rounding to 5g will not show it.

High precision scales

Around $47 for a general high precision pet scale, suited to puppies past the first weeks.

Weighing bags

Around $41. A soft bag that contains a wriggling puppy long enough to get a reading.

Large breed and adult scales

The large pet weight scale for adult dogs, useful for dosing wormers and monitoring a pregnant bitch.

Food scales

Around $25. For portioning rather than puppies, but the same accuracy applies once you are measuring formula.

How to Weigh Properly

Same time every day, before a feed, on a flat surface. Record against each puppy's collar colour. Expect roughly 5 to 10 percent gain a day in the first week. A puppy that has not gained by 24 hours needs supplementing. One that has lost weight needs a vet.
