Calcium in Pregnancy and Lactation

A lactating bitch loses calcium to her milk faster than she can replace it from diet alone, particularly with a large litter. Low blood calcium causes eclampsia, which presents as restlessness, panting, stiffness and then seizures. It is a genuine emergency and it moves within hours.

Timing Is the Critical Part

Supplementing calcium during pregnancy can actually increase eclampsia risk, because it suppresses the body's own regulation and leaves her unable to mobilise her reserves when whelping starts. The usual veterinary guidance is to supplement after whelping, through lactation, not before. Talk to your vet about your specific bitch and litter size.

Recognising Eclampsia

Restlessness, panting, whining, stiff gait, tremors. Left untreated it progresses to seizures and death. This is an emergency vet visit, not something oral calcium fixes once it has started.
