Choosing a Milk Replacer
Dog milk is far richer than cow's milk: more fat, more protein, less lactose. A replacer is formulated to match it. Substituting cow's or goat's milk gives you a puppy that is full, still hungry and has diarrhoea, which in a newborn is dangerous rather than inconvenient.

Teats
Latex teats in sizes C and F, from around $3. Size the teat to the puppy. Cutting a bigger hole in a teat that is too small is the most common cause of a puppy inhaling formula.
Mixing Correctly
Follow the ratio on the tin and do not enrich it. Formula mixed too strong causes diarrhoea; too weak and the puppy starves slowly while appearing to feed normally. Use warm water rather than boiling, which damages the proteins.
Weighing While You Feed
Weigh daily and record it. A hand reared puppy should gain steadily from day two. Flat or falling weight means the feed, the technique or the puppy needs attention, and the scales will tell you days before anything else does.
