What Haemostats Are For in Whelping

Haemostats clamp. In a whelping kit their job is the umbilical cord: clamped a couple of centimetres from the puppy's body, held for a moment, then cut on the far side. That controls the bleeding and gives you a clean, consistent stump rather than a torn one.

Haemostatic clamps

Around $35. Stainless steel, straight jaw, the general purpose option.

Haemostatic forceps

Around $40 and around $41. Longer and finer, with a locking ratchet that holds pressure without you gripping.

Straight or Curved

Straight jaws are easier for cord work. Curved jaws give better visibility when you are working around something. Most breeders keep one of each and use the straight pair for almost everything.

Sterilising Them

Boil for ten minutes or autoclave if you have access. Clean immediately after use, because dried tissue in the ratchet is difficult to remove and stops the lock working. Dry fully before storing or they will pit.

Using Them on a Cord

Clamp about 2 to 3cm from the abdomen, leave it in place for a minute or so, then cut on the placental side and dip the stump in iodine. Do not cut close to the body: too short a stump risks a hernia and gives infection an easier route in.
