Benefits of Using a Puppy Pen

Safety and Security

A puppy pen keeps young dogs safe from danger when they have the run of the house but aren't always monitored. Given the opportunity, a puppy will inevitably find its paw in the cookie jar - or find a way to jump up onto something inaccessible, it seems. Yet when a puppy is safely enclosed in a pen, an owner or caretaker can create an area where they are free to roam without access to disaster (and creating disaster) as they attempt to do other things without a mess or injury on their hands.

Easier Supervision

Thanks to puppy pens, you won't have to supervise 10 puppies at any one time. For the busy family or breeder, it's just as critical to prevent puppy destruction in the household as it is to manage other responsibilities. A puppy pen prevents the puppies from getting into trouble and, yet, allows you to pay attention to them while being able to focus on other things.

House Training and Boundary Setting

Why do pens help with house training? Puppies learn how to operate in confined spaces. A pen is where they sleep/play and cannot pee. It is a confined space that will encourage repeated behaviours that last into adulthood. If certain things happen in a pen and certain things do NOT happen in a pen, the puppy will catch on, and with spatial awareness beyond the anticipated behaviours in a home setting, the puppy will adapt.

Preventing Destructive Behaviour

Young puppies are explorative and ready to chew and scratch on anything they can, which can include furniture and personal items. Puppy pens can prevent this destructive behaviour by keeping puppies in a safe space with less access to things they could otherwise ruin in your house.

Key Features to Look for in a Puppy Pen

Size and Space

Adequate space is an important consideration. The bigger the pen, the better so that they can run, sleep, and grow in their space. If the pen is too small, it confines them and doesn't allow for proper development. If it's big enough, it allows for the proper stimulation needed for development.

Durable Materials

With the energy and playfulness of puppies, the pen must be made out of strong, durable, non-toxic materials. It should withstand some rough handling and in doing so, should keep the puppies that are inside of it safe.

Portability and Flexibility

When it comes to breeders or pet owners who need flexibility, a portable, foldable pen is necessary. It allows for movement - for cleaning, for outdoors, and for changing living spaces as the puppies grow.

Easy Cleaning

A pen with easily cleanable surfaces keeps the puppy area more sanitary. Wipeable, smooth surfaces do not collect dirt and bacteria as easily as less smooth types, making for a cleaner atmosphere and less work for breeders/owners. These pens provide structure for breeders, particularly in large litters, where keeping track of each puppy can become a challenge. RPBA promotes the use of high-quality pens, helping breeders and pet owners prioritise the health and growth of their puppies while maintaining organisation and control.
