Bedding does more work in a whelping box than most people expect. It keeps pups warm and dry, gives them grip so they can push toward the teat instead of sliding, and it comes out for washing again and again through the messiest weeks of a breeder's year.

This collection covers washable blankets, fleece bedding and reusable pee blankets suited to whelping pens, nesting areas and the crates pups move into later.

What to Look for in Whelping Bedding

Grip comes first. Newborns need a surface their legs can push against, because slippery bedding leads to splayed legs and pups that struggle to reach mum. A dense fleece or fluffy pile gives that traction while still feeling soft. Moisture handling comes next: good bedding draws wet away from the surface so pups rest dry even when the layer below is damp. Reusable pee blankets with a waterproof backing protect the floor of the box. Choose bedding you can wash hot and often, and buy several pieces so there is always a dry one ready while another is on the line.

Setting Up and Keeping It Safe

Lay bedding flat and secure the edges so a pup cannot crawl underneath and be lain on, which is a real risk in the first fortnight. Keep it smooth rather than rucked into folds. Layer puppy pads or reusable pads underneath for easier changes, and check bedding daily for chewed or frayed patches once pups get teeth. Where you use a heating pad in the whelping box, keep bedding layers thin over the warm zone and always leave the litter room to move away from the heat.
